EARLY LIFE HISTORY of the LUMPFISH:
Spawning Season of adult LUMPFISH: Spawning season is from March to May.
Where LUMPFISH Eggs are Found: Eggs are laid in large masses adhering to rocks among seaweed in shallow water. The egg masses of LUMPFISH are of various colors ranging from black, brown, red, pink, orange, yellow, green to purple. However, individual eggs within masses are all similar in color.
Characteristics of Eggs: They are laid in masses but individual eggs are about 2mm in diameter with a single oil globule. They are multicolored as mentioned above.
Size of Babies at Hatching: Baby LUMPFISH hatch at a size of 4 - 5mm in length.
Movements of LUMPFISH Babies after hatching: It must be presumed that LUMPFISH babies stay in shallow waters and rarely go out to deep water. They were consistently present in small numbers (avg. 1.5 per 30 min. tow in the Northumberland Strait from late June through August (Ref. 11). LUMPFISH were caught in small numbers on offshore collections in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Ref. 34).
