EARLY LIFE HISTORY of PACIFIC HERRING:
Spawning Season of Adult PACIFIC HERRING: Spawning occurs from March to June.
Where PACIFIC HERRING Eggs are Found: Eggs are adhesive and adhere in great masses to eelgrass, kelp, rockweed, rocks or pilings in shallow water. After stormy weather, eggs become dislodged and end up in windrows along the shore or in masses on the beach.
Characteristics of Eggs: Eggs are demersal, adhesive, 1.2 - 1.5mm in diameter with no oil globules.
Size of Babies at Hatching: Baby PACIFIC HERRING hatch at 5.6 - 7.5mm in length.
Early Movements of PACIFIC HERRING Babies: Baby herring hatch and move from the shallow bottom singly but later move in large aggregations and/or schools along shores. Baby and juvenile herrings were captured in numbers from 1 to 500 individuals in 10 min. tows in collections around both the Broken Island Group and Deer Island Group, Barkley Sound. (Ref. 18).
