EARLY
LIFE HISTORY of PACIFIC
HERRING:
Spawning
Season of Adult PACIFIC HERRING: Spawning
occurs from March to June.
Where PACIFIC HERRING Eggs are Found: Eggs
are adhesive and adhere in great masses to eelgrass,
kelp, rockweed, rocks or pilings in shallow water.
After stormy weather, eggs become dislodged and end
up in windrows along the shore or in masses on the
beach.
Characteristics
of Eggs: Eggs
are demersal, adhesive, 1.2 - 1.5mm in diameter
with no oil globules.
Size
of Babies at Hatching:
Baby PACIFIC HERRING hatch at 5.6 - 7.5mm in length.
Early Movements of PACIFIC HERRING Babies: Baby
herring hatch and move from the shallow bottom singly
but later move in large aggregations and/or schools
along shores. Baby and juvenile herrings were
captured in numbers from 1 to 500 individuals in 10
min. tows in collections around both the Broken Island
Group and Deer Island Group, Barkley Sound. (Ref. 18).
