EARLY LIFE HISTORY of THREESPINE STICKLEBACKS: *see below for early development
Spawning Season of Adult THREESPINE STICKLEBACK: Spawing occurs from April to September.
Where THREESPINE STICKLEBACK Eggs are Found: THREESPINE STICKLEBACKS construct nests consisting of small twigs and other aquatic plant parts held together by a mucilaginous secretion secreted by males. The finished nest is barrel-shaped, hollow, and with smooth circular openings at each end. The eggs are found in these nests, up to 600 in one nest.
Characteristics of Eggs: The eggs are yellowish and semiopaque; 1.5 – 1.7mm in diameter. They are laid in clusters, adhesive to each other.
Size of Babies at Hatching: Newly hatched babies range in length from 4.2 – 5 mm.
Early Movements of THREESPINE STICKLEBACK Babies: These babies hatch in nests and move out, swimming together or nearby one another near the bottom. They were only collected in small numbers (1 -3 per 10 minute tow) with fine-mesh townets in Ucluelet Inlet and Tofino Inlet (Ref. 18). They were never collected in Barkley Sound.
