(There are 2 or more species of Hexagrammidae in the
Barkley Sound area. When the collection was
sorted, time was limited to examine the specimens
and this family was unfamiliar to me. So, it is not
certain exactly which species this Hexagrammid is. I
based the species on the time it was caught.)

EARLY
LIFE HISTORY of the ROCK GREENLING:
Spawning
Season of Adult ROCK GREENLING: Spawning
occurs June to September.
Where ROCK
GREENLING Eggs
are Found: These eggs are found attached to
rocks and/or algal holdfasts in intertidal areas. Males
guard the masses of eggs.
Characteristics
of Eggs: The
eggs are undescribed.
Size
of Babies at Hatching: Baby ROCK
GREENLING hatch at ca. 7-8 mm.
Early Movements of ROCK
GREENLING Babies: Apparently
these babies hatch in shallow intertidal
water (less than 20m) and swim out or are carried
out to deeper water with currents. Baby Rock Greenlings
were captured in small numbers (< 5 individuals
per 10 min. tow) on a few occasions on 12 April,
1973 in Peacock Channel north of the Broken Island
Group (Ref.
