EARLY LIFE HISTORY of BAY PIPEFISH:
Spawning Season of Adult BAY PIPEFISH:
Spawning is May to August.
Where BAY PIPEFISH Eggs are Found: Spawning occurs in inshore protected areas. Females transfer eggs to brood pouches of the males and males retain the eggs in the pouches until they hatch at about 10-15 mm in length.
Characteristics of Eggs: Eggs of BAY PIPEFISH are oviparous, developing in brood pouches of males. Eggs are 1-1.5 mm with one or more yellow oil globules, measuring 0.4-0.5 mm.
Size of Babies at Hatching: These babies hatch from eggs in pouches at 4.5-5.0 mm in length.
Early Movements of BAY PIPEFISH Babies: Babies are released from brood pouches when they start swimming. They swim around singly. They were only caught on four occasions and on each occasion only (1 per 10 minute tow) in Tofino Inlet, Pacific Rim National Park (Ref. 18). They were never caught in Ucluelet Inlet or Barkley Sound.
